In a significant ruling, the Free State Division High Court in Bloemfontein sentenced Sphiwe Macdonald Masithela, 39, to 20 years in prison for the murder of his 35-year-old girlfriend. The incident occurred on June 23, 2023, in Winkie Direko Informal Settlement.
According to the investigation, Masithela stabbed his girlfriend multiple times, resulting in her death. When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim's lifeless body with severe stab wounds. Masithela, who had consumed a toxic substance, was rushed to the hospital and survived.
The court held Masithela accountable for his actions, sentencing him to two decades behind bars. Additionally, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The case highlights the importance of addressing domestic violence and the consequences of such heinous crimes. The police and judiciary worked together to ensure justice was served for the victim and her loved ones.
